About

You’re likely intrigued by martial arts in general. And WingChun in particular.

Perhaps you’re curious, or confused, about the many different schools and systems out there.

Each claiming to be the one and only truth!

If you want some clarity about WingChun as functional Self-Defense, you’ve come to the right place. You’ll get a new take on things, beyond the oft-regurgitated ideas.

In the 21st century, it’s best to approach this art with a fresh view.

I’ll cut through some of the conflicting opinions. My perspectives may support you on your path. I know your comments will enlighten and inspire me.

WingChun is a holistic — physical, psychological, and philosophical — Self-Defense practice with multifold benefits. I want to help you realize that!

About Sifu Paul Wang

Feeling the WingChun flow.

Thanks for your interest.

I’m the National Instructor of the International Academy of WingChun – United States (IAW-US) and the Headquarters Leader in Berkeley, California.

Since 1997, I’ve been honored to train as a continuous Private Student of Sifu Klaus Brand, IAW Founder and WingChun Grandmaster.

I’ll admit I was pretty sure but not fully convinced by WingChun up to my first decade of practice. My nature is skeptical. Or perhaps slow and stubborn! So my eyes and ears, body and mind drifted to research other styles — from Wing Tsun to Ving Tsun, from Taijiquan to Baguazhang, from East to West.

All were fine for what they were. But these comparative studies reinforced my belief in the logical basis and technical soundness of WingChun for Self-Defense. Plus, I resonated with the IAW community. Thus, I dedicated to specialize in, and hopefully master, the method formulated by Sifu Brand.

My current certification in the WingChun system is:

For the last 20 years, my passionate purpose has been professional teaching and personal practice of WingChun.

That makes me the most highly qualified IAW representative in North America, but I’m still very much learning. And, as you can imagine, it’s a big responsibility!

I’m always reinvesting my energy to:

  • Improve my understanding and embodiment of WingChun
  • Maximize my ability and quality in communicating WingChun

To do so, I draw upon my undergraduate work in Integrative Biology (at UCB including research experience in Bipedal Locomotion and Human Biodynamics; 2000) and higher education in Chinese Medicine (at FBU and ACTCM with clinical emphasis on Channel Diagnosis and Meridian Theory; 2004). My interests also spread to nutrition, meditation, neigong, hiking, camping, rewilding, grounding/earthing, barefoot training, biohacking, neurobiology, anthropology, psychology, cosmology and spirituality.

I shape this diverse knowledge into an evolving presentation of WingChun as an Art and Science of Self-Defense — self in all its dimensions and defense in all its aspects. This is an ongoing, unending development that I transmit via this blog and my classes and events.
